This is the coolest autobiography I've read all year, written by the first woman to be elected chief of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma (Wilma Mankiller served from 1985-1995). I found this while researching my tribe (as my regular readers already know, I'm a sixth generation Cherokee), and Mankiller A Chief And Her People is a truly fascinating window into both Cherokee history and the life of their best-known modern chief.

P.S. This is a really awesome trailer from the newly-released (just this month, in fact) documentary, Mankiller, which will hopefully be widely available soon! Enjoy!
The classic series was first published in 1927
